Muddog

Muddog is a free P2P (peer-to-peer) VPN provided by Mudfish Networks, designed to bypass country restrictions. Select a country to connect through the internet connection of another participant there. Participants also share their own internet connections with other users. Available countries and speeds depend on the participants who are online and their connections.

This guide covers Muddog 2 for Linux, Windows, and macOS. You do not need to register or log in to connect to the VPN or share your internet connection. If you use Windows version 1.0.7, see the legacy version guide.

Getting started

  1. Review how sharing works and get the 2.x installer for your operating system from the download page.
  2. Follow the installation guide. On Linux, log out and log back in. On macOS, approve the background service.
  3. Open Muddog and select a country under Destination. On Windows, the shortcut is named muddog.
  4. Click Connect VPN and wait for Connected.

By default, the VPN handles all IPv4 internet traffic. To use it only for specific apps, such as a browser, set up per-app VPN before connecting. Per-app VPN is supported on Linux and Windows.

Before you start

Internet sharing starts automatically when the background service starts. On Linux and Windows, it starts immediately after installation. On macOS, it starts after the first launch and service approval. Other participants' internet traffic can use your public IP address and your connection's bandwidth. Sharing continues when you close the app window or disconnect your VPN. See Internet sharing for instructions on stopping it.

Closing the app window keeps your VPN connected. When you have finished using the VPN, click Disconnect in the app.

Muddog's P2P tunnel does not add packet encryption. HTTPS encryption from the websites you visit still applies, but enabling the VPN does not encrypt all traffic. Only IPv4 traffic goes through the VPN; IPv6 uses your regular connection. However, per-app VPN on Windows blocks IPv6 traffic from selected apps. Muddog also does not provide a kill switch to block internet access if the VPN disconnects.
