What is WFP Item mode?​

For windows, WFP Item mode is implemented in Mudfish Cloud VPN v5.4.2 or higher.

For Linux, WFP Item mode is implemented in Mudfish Cloud VPN v6.2.0 or higher.

For macOS, WFP Item mode is supported in Mudfish Cloud VPN v6.5.0 or higher. It requires macOS 11.5 or later and uses Network Extension to handle TCP/UDP traffic per program.

WFP stands for Windows Filtering Platform, but to avoid confusion, the term WFP Item mode is also used on Linux and macOS.

When this mode is enabled, if possible, items are configured using the Windows Filtering Platform (WFP) function on Windows, eBPF on Linux, or Network Extension on macOS.

In the case of the existing Mudfish program, traffic is redirected by changing the operating system's routing table, but if this mode is activated, the traffic for each process is processed using the WFP function.

At here, if possible means that the item is only configured to use WFP mode if the item supports it.

If the item does not support WFP mode, the item is configured based on the existing routing table.

How to activate WFP item mode​

You can find the option to activate WFP item mode by entering the'Settings → Programs' menu if you're using "Basic" UI.

For "Simple" UI, you can find the button at dashboard.

FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)​

What are the benefits and limitations?​

Process-based traffic handling lets you apply Mudfish only to the programs you want, helping avoid unrelated traffic caused by shared CDN or cloud server addresses.

  • The Windows implementation requires Windows 8 or later.
  • The Linux implementation uses eBPF and requires Linux kernel 5.15 or later.
  • The macOS implementation requires Mudfish v6.5.0 or later and macOS 11.5 or later.
  • Packet processing is more complex than routing-table mode, so ping may increase by about 1–5 ms. This mode is not intended to lower ping.

Can I use it with Full VPN mode?​

Yes. WFP Item mode can be used with Full VPN mode.

Is it better to enable?​

It depends. If you're suffered from Amazon EC2, Twitch and Mudfish or CDN and Mudfish issues, this mode is helpful because the traffic redirection is applied to the per-process based.

Is it better to use with FastConnect mode?​

No, it's not. If WFP Item mode is applied and only the traffic of the relevant process is delivered through Mudfish, it provides the same effect as enabling FastConnect mode.

Therefore, you don't need to enable FastConnect mode.
